Have you ever paused to consider what our world, or our mission, would look like if some of the foundations we take for granted suddenly shifted beneath our feet?
- What if church wasn’t down the street, but hours away, or completely undergound?
- What if we found ourselves in a devastating war, like so many other countries around the world?
- What if it became illegal to identify as a Christian?
I don’t share these scenarios to sow panic, but as sobering reminders that we serve a God far greater than any human institution or geopolitical shift.
Even as we pray for wisdom and protection, Scripture calls us not only to trust but also to plan and steward well. Jesus said, “Be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16).
World Link Ministries has been preparing for the shifting global missions landscape for over three decades, embracing a strategy that equips and deploys local leaders to reach their own communities. Our “Train and Deploy” approach flows directly from our conviction that while God is indeed the Sender of missionaries, He never specified that all missionaries must come from the United States.
Last month, we shared the sobering reality that the number of cross-cultural missionaries is in steep decline. Consider this:
“In 2001, approximately 1.1 million cross-cultural missionaries were serving worldwide. By 2021, that number had shrunk to fewer than 430,000. Today, an estimated 12,000 missionaries leave the field each year.”
On paper, these trends might seem alarming. But for us, they confirm the timeliness of the model God placed on our hearts long ago.
Rather than lament a decline in Western missionaries, we celebrate the rise of local-led movements. From the villages of Central Asia to the cities of Latin America, local believers are rising up to proclaim the Gospel in culturally relevant ways. They understand local customs, speak the language fluently, and carry deep compassion for their neighbors. When barriers close to Western teams, these faithfully trained nationals continue the work without missing a beat.
Our model boils down to two clear steps:
- Train: We provide comprehensive theological education, free of charge—alongside practical ministry skills. Whether through in-person seminary classrooms or digital platforms, local leaders are equipped to preach, teach, and shepherd effectively.
- Deploy: Once trained, these new leaders return to their communities as church planters, discipleship mentors, and ambassadors for Christ within their own cultural context.
This rhythm of multiply-and-send has been the heartbeat of World Link since its inception. My father—our founder—caught this vision decades ago, sensing that God’s sending nature extends beyond borders and passports. Today, we rejoice to see that vision bear fruit around the globe.
Even when government restrictions tighten or travel bans arise, God provides. New technologies enable us to distribute funding securely and deliver training through online platforms. Cell-phone networks, video conferencing, and digital libraries mean that closed doors cannot extinguish the light of the Gospel.
Behind every successful training session and every vibrant church plant, we see the hand of God orchestrating provision—often through partners like you. Your prayers, financial gifts, and advocacy form the lifeline that sustains these emerging movements.
World Link Ministries is aptly named: we are connecting ministries, forging unbroken chains of discipleship that stretch across continents. Every link matters:
- Senders: Those who say, “I can’t go, but I will send”—providing the resources that equip trainers and church planters.
- Trainers: Those who invest their lives in teaching sound theology and ministry principles.
- Sent Ones: Those who answer, “Here I am, Lord; send me,” returning to their own communities to establish reproducing churches.
Together, we form a living chain that no human power can sever. As you read this, I pray you’ll consider your place in this mission: Will you stand in the gap, sending those God has called? Will you support the training that transforms ordinary believers into passionate disciples? Will you partner with us to ensure that, no matter what the future holds, the Gospel advances?
Praise the Lord—He is at work through every link! Let’s keep building this revolutionary movement together.
Gratefully in Christ,
Manny Fernandez III
